But a couple of points;

1. The data will drive the response rate they have quoted. What they know about the recipient will be critical

2. The offer and creative together with brand reputation will consummate the deal.

This is a good rant but you may want to consider the fact that CBA may not be talking about an acquisition campaign and the missing "detail" may well be that they are using their current customer insights to target a cross-sell offer.

Not sure how you define engagements but I was speaking in a pure sale/data acquisition context. Rich media is the only solution for a moves and games - agreed.

Anyway -the only factors involved in the "outperformance" were clicks and actions. The branding effect of flash and other rich media is not factored in. I do recognize that rich media has a greater potential to create visual impact and enhance brand perception.

By performance I'm assuming you mean click through rates, right? Obviously for movies and games you need to use rich flash; did you factor in engagements in your "outperformance" analysis of rich media vs. gifs?
